Jetboil - personal cooking system

I just got a Jetboil from Stephanie for my big 40 birthday. It’s really cool; the whole package fits in the pot/bottle. The unit is the size of a 2 liter Nalgene bottle. In it is the stove, fuel (sold seperately) and stand (sold seperately). Its an aluminum “pot” that snaps on the stove that screws on the fuel. It boils water in two minutes.

I did a lot of research because I was skepticle at first about 1. fuel, 2. stabilitly and 3. cooking solids. So the stabliizer works great - comes with a pan stove top so you can use a frying pan too. The fuel is proprietery but you can use other propane fuel mixes that are avail in most places.

If I take a trip with a group I’d still expect to either bring my MSR Dragonfly or ask someone else to bring theirs. But for a solo trip this is fantastic.

Thanks Stephanie!

Wikipedia

One of the reasons I started a blog was to understand the technology; the other reason was to understand the concept. In its basic form a blog (short for Web-log) is a frequently updated website. But as professionals, companies and individuals have evolved their blogs they realize that the value comes not only from the content they add but the content others add as well. So imagine you start a topic and say everything you know. Then someone else comes in and adds more, others come in and correct what is wrong, others expand and add other ancillary topics. Through continued consolidation and a democratic process, the end result is extraordinarily accurate.
The same concept applies to less centralized applications with all contributors being equal to a point, and it used in many sites called Wiki’s that consolidate information about specific topics, self support software applications, forums, etc. So…

Bang, someone realized that is the most amazing way to start an encyclopedia. Wikipedia! What makes it work is that anyone can edit the content of these pages. Wikipedians are the people who write and edit articles for Wikipedia. Further, anyone can register to become an administrator. An administrator is simply a Wikipedian who can access the few restricted Wikipedia software functions: deleting articles and uploaded files, protecting and unprotecting pages and blocking and unblocking IP addresses. As you make useful edits over a period of time, you prove to the community that you are here in good faith. After some months, you can add your name to a list to be promoted. There are several levels all the way up to a board of trustees.

So Go Try It Out!

My friend Roger has decided to post in my Spirituality, God and Mythology forum so I am going to keep the fourms out there. You should go take a look: http://www.charanis.com/forum/
I trimmed them back to just a few topics. At some point as I continue to learn PHP I’ll finda way to bring this all together. Discussion topics include Activities, UM Terps, Philosopy, Politics and Product Review

Recovering nicely

I’m in Hilton Head this week with the family visiting Mom and Pop. My knee is recovering nicely! I have taken off the bandages and put on the bandaids. I have walked on it and am now going up and down the steps. I stoped the pain pills, they made me sick. I think another week and out come the stitches and I should have full range of motion. By next month, I’ll go see Doc and hopefully start running again!

Hike to the AT was cancelled this year, my buddy Andrew had other plans. So I’m going to round up some friends here in Atlanta and perhaps hike a different part. Any ideas?

Arthroscopic Surgery on my Knee

The tear - this is my meniscus - the cartilage in my knee. I somehow tore it last year and today I had Arthroscopic surgery to fix it. Dr. John Day did it in a half hour and now I have to recover for a few days to a few weeks. Isn’t this picture amazing….
Before

Can you believe. Dr. Day was telling me about this new equipment he had that puts the pictures on CDROM and i said, can i have one? and he said sure! This is the tear he removed. Only about 10% so I’ll be happy again with little loss of cushion.I’m just sitting here watching the tube with my leg up. Wife and kids waiting on me.
Here is after he fixed it.
After
I expect to be running soon - modern medicine is pretty amazing. Check back to see how it feels after the drugs wear off.

In a Place That is So Different from Home

Maia my daughter at camp away are you making new friends on this day?
What new things have you tried this week?
In a place that is so different from home.

As you run through the woods or jump in the lake
Or tell your new friends of your dreams as you wake
Do you stop and look around and appreciate?
In a place that is so different from home.

So many games so many crafts
so many sheep so many calfs
so many songs and plays in which you act
in a place that is so different from home.

There is learning and playing and singing and praying
friends you talk to and some you hold on to
You are growing and going thinking and knowing catching and throwing
in a place that is so different from home.

So I ask you this day to look around and say to yourself as you read this poem
„how can I try and record this in my mind to grow and change and share what I find
with my family that is waiting for me at home.“

For we are dreaming of you having fun in the sun
Playing with friends and eating hot-dogs on a bun
Reading your books when you need to be alone
In a place that is not so different from home.

Love, Dad

….thats better.

Pride

When the moon rises and the stars hide
I shuffle my feet and swallow my pride
I consider the world in which I reside
and sigh

For the things I own and the things I desire
cannot match the things that matter
It is what we nurture and what we grow
It is who we help and what we know
It is what we say when we don’t have to speak
It is what we don’t when we know we shouldn’t

never mind, this is going nowhere….

You know what I mean.
